In partnership with Harp and along with other local churches, we open our doors to people who have nowhere to sleep during the winter months (Dec-Mar).

Operating on a Tuesday night we provide food, warmth, clothes, a place to sleep and friendship to our local homeless community.  Each guest needs to sign up with Harp on the day to be given entry to the Shelter enabling Harp to support the individual fully.

We are a distribution centre for Southend Food Bank and open on a Thursday between 1.00- 3.00 pm for voucher holders. Vouchers can be obtained from a local agency such as CAB, Family Mosaic and the Job Centre.

Our free Community Cinema meets at 3pm on the 4th Friday of every month.  Enjoy thoughtful films, meet new friends and treat yourself to ice cream and popcorn. Open to all, come and join us!

STBBC has been involved with Christians Against Poverty for many years running Money Management courses, helping people at all stages in life to understand their finances and make more informed decisions. In 2014 we opened the first Debt Centre in Southend in conjunction with 15 other churches in the area.  In the first two years of operation we have seen over 100 clients and so far 16 have gone debt free.

Debt advice is provided by experts at CAP and our task locally is to help clients sort through their paperwork and present a budget that has been prepared by CAP.

We also provide emotional and practical support for clients with a team of befrienders who accompany us on visits. We share our faith with any clients who are interested and offer to pray for clients who are happy to be prayed for. The service we provide is available to anyone regardless of age, gender, faith or background.

If you would like to ask for help dealing with debt you can call 0800 328 0006 or visit the website.

STBBC took responsibility for the repair and transformation of three of our local community's beach shelters on behalf of Southend Borough Council. The regeneration of the dilapidated wood and steel beach front canopies ensured that they are now returned to their former glory and can continue to offer seating for tired legs and shelter in rainy weather.

In addition to our repair work, we continue to sponsor one shelter and carry out regular maintenance.

A small team of dedicated volunteers from STBBC regularly visit our local primary schools to support staff and children by reading stories at story time.

For more information about any of our COMMUNITY WORK, please contact ELIZABETH STONER.
